Sachiko Kato is a Japanese-American concert pianist, recording artist, and educator whose artistic life spans performance, recording, and teaching. Her work is guided by a deep commitment to musical expression, the individuality of sound, and the connection between musical understanding and physical freedom.
As a performer, she brings a distinctive voice to repertoire ranging from Bach to contemporary music. As an educator, she is the creator of The Sachiko Method, an approach that makes the intuitive musical and physical processes of exceptional musicians explicit and teachable.
An Artistic Life
Sachiko Kato has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States and Japan, appearing in venues including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Hall, and Alice Tully Hall. Her recordings encompass works by Bach, Debussy, Ravel, and Brahms, reflecting her interest in the expressive possibilities of sound, color, and musical structure.
Her artistic practice remains central to her teaching. The questions she encounters as a performer—how to hear more clearly, move more freely, and communicate the composer’s intentions—continue to inform her work with students.

Making the intuitive teachable
I believe that music-making is a natural human capacity and that every person has a unique musical voice waiting to be discovered. The Sachiko Method grew from my desire to help students find that voice and express it with greater freedom.
Developed through decades of performing and teaching, the method makes the intuitive musical and physical processes of exceptionally gifted musicians explicit and teachable. Through note naming, solfège, rhythmic awareness, inner hearing, and the anticipation of movement, students learn to prepare music mentally before translating it into physical action.
By developing clarity before repetition, students can move beyond simply playing the correct notes toward a more personal, confident, and expressive relationship with music.
