Biography

Japanese-born, Los Angeles-raised, and Juilliard-trained pianist Sachiko Kato has established an international career as a recitalist, soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and educator. Praised for the beauty of her sound and the individuality of her interpretations, she brings a thoughtful and deeply personal approach to a repertoire spanning Bach to contemporary music.

Kato made her New York debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 1994. She has since performed extensively throughout North and South America and Japan, appearing at venues including Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Steinway Hall, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as at festivals and concert series. Her performances have been featured on WQXR, WNYC, KMZT, and WKCR-FM.

Her recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, released by Centaur Records in 2012, received enthusiastic critical acclaim. Fanfare praised its “velvet smoothness and silken beauty” and described the recording as “truly special” and “urgently recommended.” Her discography also includes recordings of works by Debussy and Ravel (OCCA Records, 2019) and Brahms’s late piano works (OCCA Records, 2021).

Kato received her Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where she studied on scholarship. Her musical development was also shaped by studies with Russell Sherman in Boston and by her earlier education at California State University, Northridge. She was selected as one of 100 outstanding alumni featured in Dance Drama Music: 100 Years of the Juilliard School, published in celebration of the institution’s centenary.

Alongside her performing career, Kato has devoted decades to teaching and the development of musical understanding. She has taught at LaGuardia Community College, Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Music Center, and the Bard College Preparatory Division. Her work with students of different ages and levels has informed her conviction that the qualities often associated with exceptional musical talent can be studied, understood, and cultivated.

She is the creator of The Sachiko Method and author of The Sachiko Method: How to Find the Music Within You. Her approach seeks to make the intuitive musical and physical processes of exceptionally gifted musicians explicit and teachable. By integrating note naming, solfège, rhythmic awareness, inner hearing, and the anticipation of movement, she helps students develop greater clarity, coordination, independence, and expressive freedom.

Kato is also the founder of Hudson Piano Academy, offering private instruction in New York City, Fort Lee, New Jersey, and online. She continues to perform, record, teach, and present workshops and masterclasses, bringing her artistic experience into an ongoing exploration of how music is learned, understood, and communicated.

Sachiko Kato resides in New York City.
